How To Clean Your Earbuds

How To Clean Your Earbuds
Earbuds are prone to getting dirty. Learn how to properly clean earbuds to improve sound quality, prolong their lifespan, and prevent ear infections.

Do you ever struggle to keep your earbuds clean after regular use? The struggle is a common one for many wireless earbud users. Dirty earbuds lessen sound quality and might also cause ear infections. Read on to learn an effective way to clean your earbuds and keep the music flowing.

Why You Should Clean Your Earbuds

If you let your earbuds get dirty, you might run into a couple issues. Are you having trouble hearing certain parts of the audio? Excess grime blocks sound from getting to your ears. If you don’t clean them, you won’t be able to hear clearly. The bacteria and debris might also cause an ear infection or general discomfort. To prevent these issues, always clean your earbuds after use, and never wear them when they’re dirty.

When to Clean Your Earbuds

Clean your earbuds whenever dirt, oil or wax grows on the tips. The amount of residue on the tips will help you determine how heavily you’ll need to clean them. How often you clean your earbuds depends on your lifestyle. If you only use them occasionally, a brief cleaning every now and then should keep them in good shape. Someone who listens on a regular basis should clean them daily.

The Best Way to Clean Earbuds

Earbuds like UE FITS are fitted with tips that should be removed first. Never submerge the entire earbud in liquid, and disconnect them from electronic devices.

Gather the following items:

- Microfiber cloth
- Bowl of lukewarm water
- Dish soap
- Cotton swabs

In most cases, a microfiber cloth will get rid of loose dust and/or oil. For a deeper clean, follow these steps:

  1. Mix a couple drops of dish soap with half a cup of lukewarm water. With the tips removed, soak them in the solution for 30 minutes.
  2. While the tips soak, wipe away dirt from the earbuds using a microfiber cloth.
  3. After the tips soak, use cotton swabs to wipe away oil and debris.
  4. Lastly, rub a small drop of isopropyl alcohol over the tips. Always allow the tips to dry before reattaching them.

Storing Earbuds

After cleaning, store them in the charging case to protect them. Always make sure they’re dry before using the case. Store the case in a cool, dry place; high temperatures and humidity can lead to damage.

Ear Cleanliness

Lastly, make sure to keep your ears clean too. Regular ear cleaning lessens the need to clean your earbuds and provides proper space and alignment at the opening of your ear canals. By following our method and developing a routine, you’ll get great sound quality and a comfortable listening experience.
